In Sra. Cappiello's Spanish 4 for Heritage Speakers classes, the students investigated the pros and cons of having the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. They wrote an open letter to the president of FIFA expressing their concerns about corruption and human rights abuses, they showed their support for the positive changes that occurred, and they made suggestions for the World Cup in 2026 to encourage FIFA to lead by example and to contribute to a more just and equitable world so that everyone can enjoy this exciting and unifying event.
In Sra. Cappiello's Spanish 3 for Heritage Speakers classes, the students investigated Sustainable Development Goal #2-Zero Hunger (Hambre Cero). Students learned about the causes of hunger and actions we need / the world needs to take to reach that goal. They researched the cultural practice of eating insects--la entomofagia--as an alternative food source for the future, but they were also celebrating and honoring the ancestral knowledge of many Latino students, since this practice dates back to pre-Columbian times in Mexico.
